HISTORY
The men of Canaan met and created a mission in May, 1991. Pastor Wyatt Tee Walker chartered and named the men’s group the Fishermen’s Fellowship on October 19, 1991. He charged us to branch out and serve in diversified auxiliaries to become Fishers of Men, according to Mark 1:17, “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
The Fishermen have served in areas such as literacy training; the computer literacy network; career fairs; writers for the Canaan Voice; Thanksgiving delivery drivers; health, nutrition and finance seminars; mentorship; men’s retreats; Men’s Day breakfast banquets; Cradle Roll Nursery; and Central Harlem Health Fair marshals.
The Fishermen have also served as chairs of Church outings, Church Anniversaries, the Church-wide Bible Institute, and the Spring Anniversary of Ministries.
The Fishermen have served Canaan youth as coordinators of whitewater rafting trips, and trips to Alvin Ailey dance concerts, the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, and the Schomburg Library.
The Fishermen have been pioneers in the Dance The Word Men’s Ministry, the Fishermen’s Weather Watch, and parking lot patrol and maintenance, creating tactical safety models for neighborhood watch networks.
