SENIOR SERVICES
Currently, Canaan Baptist Church of Christ is the sponsor and contractor for the Canaan Senior Service Center, which provides services and nutritional aid for the senior residents of the surrounding community. Located in Harlem, the center has become an important organization in the community through its work with the senior citizens it serves and assists.
Through the visionary leadership of Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, the Canaan Senior Service Center began in 1972 with a one-day-per- week program totally funded and staffed by volunteers of Canaan Baptist Church. Since September 1975, the center has continued to be sponsored by the church, with a monthly contribution, but is funded by the New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA) for personnel services, meals, rent, utilities, raw foods, and other expenses such as consultants and Title V senior program aides. Personnel funds are provided from four sources, DFTA, Title V, Eastern Seals and Angel Guardians for the Elderly.
Canaan Senior Service Center staff provides daily comprehensive services Monday through Friday from 9:00 am. to 5:00 pm. These services include case assistance, entitlements counseling, information, referrals, escort services, shopping assistance, transportation, telephone reassurance calls to the isolated and home bound, friendly visits to the sick and shut-in, and education and recreation for the daily participants.
