The Reverend Akin O. Royall is a native of Brooklyn, New York. In 1981, he was baptized and united with the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York, under the pastorate of the late Rev. Thomas Harrison. On April 2, 1995, he was licensed to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the New Life Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York, under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. John H. Marshall. Rev. Royall studied religion and philosophy, along with speech and drama, at Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia.
On June 28, 2009, Rev. Royall was ordained to the Gospel Ministry by the New York Missionary Baptist Association, and installed as the fifth pastor of the BrightLightBaptistChurchin Brooklyn, New York. Under the pastorate of Rev. Royall, the church membership has tripled, persons have been added to the spiritual and official boards, and the Church staff has increased. The Church Bylaws and Constitution have been revised adopted, and physical restorations as well as major renovations have taken place.
The music ministry has been revitalized; new Church bulletins and letterhead have been created; a monthly Building Fund Drive has been established; weekly Bible Study has been reinstituted; and a New Members Orientation class has been created where each new member of Bright Light can receive the vision of the of the Church directly from the Pastor, as well as build a one-on-one spiritual relationship with him. Through God's favor, Pastor Royall led the church out of a major financial deficit within the first six months of his pastorate. At the beginning of Rev. Royall's pastorate at Bright Light Baptist Church, the Church adopted a new motto, If you have the faith, God has the power.
Rev. Royall serves as a faculty member of the Congress of Christian Education of the New York Missionary Baptist Association; 2nd Vice President of the Congress of Christian Education of the New York Progressive Baptist State Convention; and as Assistant Treasurer of the Eastern Region of the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Bright Light has also taken a more active role in community affairs through Rev. Royall' s civic and religious affiliations with the 73rd Precinct Clergy Council, Brooklyn Community Board #16, the African American Clergy and Elected Officials, and the Brooklyn Council of Churches.
